Burning Man Anyone??

topic posted Fri, June 13, 2008 - 10:51 PM by  Blue
I'll be riding up from the LA area. Last year a fellow burner, whom I met on tribe, joined me for the ride up. As most of you know, it's much better (and safer) going with a riding partner. Anyone care to join me? It's like two awesome experiences wrapped up in one week!

Friends...yes, indeed! I bring clothes, a tent, a shade structure, a sleeping bag, and basic essentials. The rest - bike, food, water and libations - arrive via my buddy's van. I got it all figured out!

OK, I was clinging to the hope that someone had otherwise figured out how to bring all their gear in the true spirit of 'radical self reliance.' I'm a pretty hardcore camper (just survived my 23rd Harley Rendezvous) but Burning Man requires a lot more packing space than a Harley.
I was, however, rather pleased with the shape I was in from riding a bicycle 10 miles a day.

I've heard of Burner camps that accommodate motorcycling to the City. You pre-arrange to have them haul your gear & supplies.

Post your intentions/desires on the Burning Man Tribe, Craigslist, BM ePlaya, etc. I'll bet you'll find what you're looking for.

    Enjoy ~ KnowMatterWhat

P.S. The 'To Burn or not to Burn' question is a mighty personal decision and topic of many a thread. I'm of the mind, if you don't think Burning Man is for you, it probably isn't. You have to really WANT to be there to enjoy the experience and throughly prepare for it too.

The restrictions on motorcycles are pretty complex on the Playa. It would be pretty difficult to ride all the way there with even part of my gear, convert it to an art vehicle, keep it fueled and then use it to ride home. I don't think even the Thunderdome guys rode the art bikes in. I have one acquaintance, another moto-journalist, who rode in about 10 years ago.
It's a nice idea. In practice, it's not so practical.

Agreed ~ There's a BIG difference between riding to the Playa vs. riding to the Playa AND riding your motorcycle ON the Playa. BM DMV is mighty particular about what they allow.

I've thought about riding to the playa, but it's not how to get my stuff there that prevents me from doing it... I don't want that playa dust fouling my bike.... Just look what it does to your feet and your hands and imagine what it'll do to your chrome and leather. No thanks!!

A few Burns ago I was riding my bicycle down on C or D Street when I saw a couple of riders come in one afternoon. They wore shit-grinning smiles, they were so obviously happy. And their gear and sport bikes were caked with Playa dust.

I imagine the best thing to do after parking the bike is to go over it with a few soft nylon brushes and a few liberal shots of canned compressed air to remove as much dust as possible. Then tape over the likely parts that blowing dust would infiltrate. And then park it inside a covered, enclosed shelter and cover the bike with a decent bike cover or tarp. Saran wrapping it might even be worth it.

And of course, though sharing the Exodus lanes would normally be illegal in Nevada, I don't recall seeing any of the few riders who did so getting pulled over. How I did envy them their quick getaway too.

I can't tell you what playa dust will do for chrome, but I did wear leather boots constantly and occasionally my chaps <G>, and it didn't do them any harm.

Thanks for the all the comments. What I've done the past couple years is ride in, find our camp, unload the gear from the bike and shrink-wrap it with a big roll of clear packaging plastic. You know, the kind you'd use to wrap up a crate full of boxes. One of my campmates brings it from the shipping department of his company. In fact, a whole roll will wrap up several bikes, so I offer it up to all my fellow adventurers - except for the GS riders of course (j/k). Anyone going on a bike is welcome to it, just hit me up before you leave and I'll let you know where we'll be setting up home for the week.

While I'm stuck in line during Exodus, I spy those damn GS riders lanesplitting. Yeah, I'm envious.

I would so take you up on this, if I wasn't doing early entry this year (with all the gear). Enjoy your burn.

The ground is nearly smooth and hard like concrete: no rocks, no plants, no terrain. A dropped Chevy Impala wouldn't have an issue out there.

The Playa is hard-packed where it's heavily trafficked -- like on the Esplanade or the radiating streets or the approaches from 395. Which still means that with the wind storms, the dust moves and creates enough spots that riding the Playa can be like riding over beach sand at times. Water trucks come along and spray the dust and road down. But it gets really hot on the Playa and so the conditions stay fairly dusty.

                  only on the roads.

My klr kept digging in when i was out on open playa during 4th of juplaya. And, the little dunes made for high pucker factor if you were moving at speed.

It's a drier year, due to lake of rain. That being the case, more dust buildup and higher berms. While surveying the city layout, a dune of thirty feet tall was found. Yikes.

i found a very, very soft~20 ft dune. Fortunately, it was delightfully soft to land on...

I rode a little slower after that. I didn't even see it til i was less than 50 feet away.

The next day, it was gone.
