Poll Please: Signing Over a Title

It would be of great use to find out what is needed in each state, preferably Texas, when titling a vehicle.
I would also like to know if whiteout makes a title null & void in your state, preferably Texas.

I bought a bike from a guy in Frisco, TX. There were some title issues: he tried to tell me that in Texas, all you needed was the Release of Lien and a Bill of Sale. I'd like to know if it's true.

There were two names on the Title with no "AND or OR" between the names. Can one person sign in the state of Texas?
This guy seems to think so.

I don't believe a word of what he tells me about how they do it in Texas. I'd like to hear from you to let me know.
Your response would be most appreciated.

Well, have you tried to register the title in your state?

I think registration of a vehicle in one state is pretty much the same as in another state. Except in California, with its smog laws, rules and restrictions and 7,500-miles-on-the-odometer rule.

In California the DMV probably would not issue a new pink if both title owners' signatures weren't on the title. Unless i guess one of the title owners was dead and a notarized state death certificate was proffered as proof. And I know for a fact that an inked out number on the old title will make the DMV say, Have the previous owner initial that change and fill in this new form.

If you have the bike, the title, the release and a BoS but can't get title to the bike in your state, then sue the asshole in small claims court for fraud. If the transaction was made in Texas, I guess that means you'll have to duke it out in a Texas court. You could also try filing a complaint with the county district attorney's office. You'll probably also have to find the other title owner and get him/her to sign it. Unless of course he/she claims it was stolen. And then you lose the bike and your $$.

Sorry that my info is full of bad news.

    GL to you.

A Title is a legal document and you cannot make alterations to it. If you screw up, the right way to correct it is to line it out ONCE and initial it. It was the whiteout tape that destroyed the document.

On a much better note, this couple got off their butts, went to the tax accessor's office and managed to get a certified copy of the title, which was filled out correctly. They DHL'd it yesterday and I have it today. I should finally be able to register it here in Alabama tomorrow.

(SIDE NOTE: I have a salvage title on my Beemer and am having trouble getting a tag for it. So for the last four years I've been riding the bike with a sign in the plate holder saying "Alabama Tag Applied For". It's true.... I applied for it.... they just won't give one to me <wink, wink>)
