Heyall. New here. Cops tell me I look like a biker, people in bars do the same, but I just like leather. My legs have been too busted up to ride. But that doesn't preclude me from being in the passenger seat! I'm not too hung-up on the "Guy in front bitch on back" thing. Everyones seen the Tee Shirts. Anyway, I share the one percent mindset. I support 81 and have a California supporter patch on my vest. I'm selling my house this summer and where I end-up is anyone's guess. Looking for a guy with dreads to his waist? (I put Billy Lane to shame) Drop me a line!

Damn deer

Friday night around 11:00pm I was headed home - about a twenty mile ride. I had recently seen deer out and about on my normal route home, so I decided to take another road; a bit wider, less curves.
Sure as hell, about five miles from home, a deer jumped out in front of me and I hit it.
I woke up in the hospital with a major concussion, two broken teeth, road rash (even though I was fully leathered) a broken elbow and a broken foot. Damn lucky it wasn't worse.

PLEASE everybody, take your protective gear seriously. Helmet, leathers, gloves and boots are the MINIMUM I will ride with now. Regardless of the weather, I'm wearing it all!

Be safe.

trauma survival information

This is from a friend, whose course I took a few years ago... worth it!

Is it a Heart Attack or a Motorcycle Crash?

Vicki Sanfelipo, RN/EMT – Director Accident Scene Management, Inc.

I am very concerned about motorcyclist’s well-being. I’ve been riding for well over 20 years and used to be able to enjoy the ride without knowing how vulnerable I was. I’m not talking about protective gear or the fact that we are not surrounded by metal. I’m talking about what happens in the event we go down. Bikers are at much higher risk of dying in the event of a crash.

According to NHTSA’s 2007 Recent Trends in Motorcycle Crashes: “In 2005, motorcycles made up 2.5 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for only 0.4 percent of all vehicle miles traveled (VMT). However, in the same year, motorcyclists accounted for 10.5 percent of total traffic fatalities. Per 100,000 registered vehicles, the fatality rate for motorcyclists (73.12) in 2005 was 5.4 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants (13.64). Per vehicle mile traveled in 2005, motorcyclists (42.27) were about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants (1.14) to die in motor vehicle traffic crashes.”

While NHTSA statistics can be in question without other stats to point to, their statistics show an alarming trend. Even if slightly off this is STILL alarming! We (motorcyclists) must not accept the fact that 10.5 % of motor vehicle fatalities are motorcycle related. I have been tracking these statistics for 12 years and they have not changed significantly. While we have put all of our eggs into one basket by concentrating on avoiding the crash in the first place, treatment after the crash occurs has largely been ignored. It not only has been ignored by motorcyclists, it’s been ignored by the Emergency Medical System (EMS) as well! While avoiding the crash in the first place is extremely important, all of our efforts have not significantly changed the number of motorcycle related crashes. (NHTSA - 93Motorcycles{1}).

I recently toured a 911 dispatch center. I asked what advice they would give for a motorcyclist who was not breathing and had a full face helmet on. They said they would recommend that the caller pump on the chest, up to 300 times per minute. I asked a group of 50 motorcyclists how they would treat a motorcyclist who wasn’t breathing and was unconscious. They said THEY would open the airway (head tilt/chin lift) and do chest compressions. I polled EMTs. 75% were not “comfortable” with the jaw thrust method of opening a person’s airway while keeping the neck straight and 60% had not learned helmet removal as part of their training.

So much needs to be done in the area of Motorcycle Trauma Treatment that I am dumbfounded we have actually survived! While motorcycle rider training and share the road programs should continue in order to prevent the crash in the first place, proper care and treatment after the fact must be addressed in order to reduce the 10.5% of serious injuries and fatalities motorcyclists suffer. The most likely person to be at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another motorcyclist. Treatment can start right away if we are trained in proper care. In the event that another trained motorcyclist is not there, we want to know that advice given by the 911 dispatcher is correct. When professionals arrive we want to rest assured that they can provide proper care as well.

The American Heart Association recently came out with the recommendation that Chest Compressions only with minimal interruptions has increased survival rates in victims of witnessed cardiac arrest. This has sparked much media attention. For years, CPR was thought to be the “cure all” for anyone who collapsed for any reason and was not thought to be breathing. There was no clear distinction between trauma and heart attack/cardiac arrest other than an occasional mention of using jaw thrust for someone who might have a neck injury. In the past few years, the American Heart Association has obviously moved away from trauma and is concentrating more on their actual purpose (survival rates of cardiac arrest) vs. survival rates of Trauma. The problem with this is that the general public and even medical professionals have not made the separation.

Both Head Tilt Chin Lift and pumping on the chest are the wrong things to do in a trauma unless Jaw Thrust and Bleeding control measures have not been effective. A Motorcyclist who has crashed so significantly that they are no longer breathing should be highly suspected as a person with high cervical spine neck injury. Jaw Thrust Rescue Breathing keeps the neck straight while lifting the tongue off the back of the throat which is the most likely reason that they are not breathing. Once breathing has been established, circulation should be considered. In trauma, the most likely reasons for loss of circulation is bleeding, not pump failure like in cardiac arrest. Imagine that you have someone who is bleeding and you now start pumping on the chest. You will just help them bleed out faster!

So what can we do? It’s time to take control of our own fate. Helmet removal training is not enough, CPR is not enough, and First Aid is not enough.

1.) Bystander Assistance Trauma training by motorcyclists is the BEST way to start proper care immediately. See www.accidentscene.org to find classes or get more information.

2.) We need to get the attention of the EMS and insist that they give proper advice as well as being certain that they are properly trained in motorcycle specific care from First Responder level to Paramedic. Write to your legislators asking them to contact the US DOT to request that they work with Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASMI) to develop a module on motorcycle trauma as part of Basic EMT training (currently they only mention helmet removal, but even that is not required).

3.) Get this word out. Reprint this article in your newsletters.

4.) Help get ASMI training in all states and available to all bikers. Encourage Motorcycle groups and organizations to make a donation to ASMI which is leading the way in this topic. ASMI is in 26 states but our goal is to be in every state some day. Because we are so motorcycle specific we are not eligible for most grants. We depend on motorcyclists to help us achieve our goals.

Trying a different tire

I ride a HD Dyna Super Glide -- a 'sport cruiser'. The Harley's all come stock with Dunlop's and Dunlop had a strike this year, many of the tires are only available at HD dealers, and the last tire I had changed by a dealer cost me about $100 for the labor alone.

Nervously, I'm switching over to Metzler ME 880 tires. It's not like my car where I'll put the cheapest tires on it (because it eats them anyways from uncorrectable alignment problems), and the Metzlers have good reviews.... but I'm still a little nervous about how well those tires will hold up with the wide variety of riding that I do. Switching to the ME's opens up my options for where I can have them installed -- the place doing it is charging $40/tire on the bike.

I thought I'd start this thread so I could hear your simular experiences with changing tire brands/types, and also follow it up with a review of the tires after putting some miles on them.

1980 Honda CM400T Motorcycle for sale in SF East Bay. $450 obo before April 4th. Its been sitting, needs minimal work to get running again.

I am selling my 1980 Honda CM400T motorcycle, in order to help pay off some debt. I bought this bike about almost two years ago from the Bikeyard SF in San Francisco.

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/aprivateaccount/my%20motorcycle%20album/January620071980HondaCM400T012.jpg

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/aprivateaccount/my%20motorcycle%20album/May182007motorcycleridephotosinS-1.jpg

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/aprivateaccount/my%20motorcycle%20album/Removalofleftsidecrankcasecoverands.jpg

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/aprivateaccount/my%20motorcycle%20album/May182007motorcycleridephotosinS-1.jpg

It was running very reliably & well for me when I bought it from the Bikeyard SF. But it has a bit of rust, needs a new chain, sprocket, rear tire and could use general tune up & probably new battery from sitting at this point.

It need these repairs to get running again as it has been sitting now for months, so whoever buys it will need to tow it.
But for $475 it is an excellent deal for an older but strongly built Honda motorcycle.

When I called several shops about estimates for what it would cost to take it to their shop to get it running the average was @ $300.
If doing the work yourself, cost would be much less. Around $150.?

Clean title in my name, tags / registration expired in August 2007, but its cheap to renew. Insurance for one year was $89 for me for this bike. 31,441 miles on odometer.
I am accepting best reasonable cash offers, preferably @ $475 before April 4.

Bike is located in El Cerrito, off Central Ave.
Call 510-35-1263 or message me to view and buy. No refunds.
First cash purchase takes it. Must bring your own help & means of taking and transporting it.

The Deadly Dozen: 12 Motorcycle Safety Myths and Misconceptions

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/streetsurvival/dangerous_motorcycle_safety_myths/index.html

When science meets urban legend and imperfect logic, some of the "facts" motorcyclists think they "know" about motorcycle safety, crashes, and riding turn out to be dangerous myths and misconceptions. From the February 2006 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser magazine. By Art Friedman.

Get a group of motorcyclists talking about crashes and safety, and you will almost certainly hear some of them—popular misconceptions, incorrect assumptions, urban legends, and intuitive explanations about motorcycle safety that turn out to be wrong when you actually check out the facts. The problem is that believing these misconceptions can increase your chances of being involved in an accident or getting hurt when you do crash.

Maybe you know BS when you hear it, but maybe you have heard some myths repeated so often or by people whose expertise you respect that you think they are actually true. Unfortunately, there are a lot of motorcyclists who do believe them. We thought that some of these fallacies should be brought out into the light of day so that riders have the right information upon which to make informed riding-safety decisions. We also hope it will keep more motorcyclists from repeating such misconceptions to riders who turn to them for advice.

These are the Deadly Dozen, the motorcycle safety myths and urban legends ones that we hear most frequently.

Myth 1: Other Drivers Don't Care About Motorcyclists

It may seem hard to believe at times, but other drivers almost never actually want to hit you. Most of those near-misses come about because they don't always know you are there, even when you are right in front of them, seemingly in plain view. You can be obscured or completely hidden by glare, by other things on or along the road, by the cars roof pillars, the handicap hangtag, or by other traffic. Of course, not all drivers "think motorcycles" and make the effort to look that extra bit harder to see if there might be a motorcyclist hidden by that obscuration or in their blind spot.

Instead of assuming that they will ignore you even when they see you, you should help make it easier for drivers to spot you, especially as the population ages and more drivers have greater difficulty in picking you out. To overcome the fact that you might be hard to see and harder to notice, wear bright colors, especially on your helmet and jacket. Run your high beam during the day. Think about things that can hide you and your bike from other drivers, things that can be as common as the sun behind you, the car ahead in the next lane, or a couple of roadside poles that line up on the driver's line of sight toward you. Make an effort to ride in or move to a location where drivers with potentially conflicting courses can see you before they stray your way.

Myth 2: Loud Pipes Save Lives

Yeah, there are a few situations—like where you are right next to a driver with his window down who is about the to change lanes—where full-time noise-makers might help a driver notice you, but all that noise directed rearward doesn't do much in the most common and much more dangerous conflict where a car turns in front of you. Maybe it's the fatigue caused by the noise, maybe it's the attitudes of riders who insist on making annoying noise, or perhaps loud bikes annoy enough drivers to make them aggressive. Whatever the reason, the research shows that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently than those with stock pipes. If you really want to save lives, turn to a loud jacket or a bright helmet color, which have been proven to do the job. Or install a louder horn. Otherwise, just shut up.

Myth 3: Motorcycle Helmets Break Necks

It seems logical—you put more weight out there on the end of your neck and when you get thrown off the bike, that extra weight will create more pendulum force on your neck. Turns out, it doesn't work that way. In fact, the energy-absorbing qualities of a DOT motorcycle helmet also absorb the energy that breaks riders' necks in impacts. Studies show that helmeted motorcyclists actually suffer fewer neck injuries when they crash compared to riders who crash without helmets.

Myth 4: Helmets Block Your Ability to See or Hear Danger

The thing you learn when you dig into the research is that motorcycle riders who use helmets crash less frequently than those who don't. Maybe that happens because motorcyclists who decide to wear helmets have a better or more realistic attitude about riding. Maybe it's because putting on a helmet is a reminder that what you are about to do can be dangerous and the act of accepting protection puts you in the right mindset. Maybe it's because a helmet provides eye protection and cuts down wind noise so you can actually see and hear better. Maybe its because, by cutting wind pressure and noise, a helmet reduces fatigue. Whatever the reasons, wearing a helmet clearly does not increase a motorcyclist's risk of having an accident and wearing one correlates to reduced likelihood of an accident.

Myth 5: A Helmet Won't Help in Most Crashes

People look at the seemingly low impact speeds used in motorcycle-helmet testing and assume that if you are going faster than that, the helmet will no longer be up to the job. That ignores a few critical facts:

Most accidents happen at relatively low speeds.
Most of the impact energy is usually vertical—the distance your head falls until it hits.
Helmets (or at least helmets that meet DOT standards) perform spectacular life-saving feats at impact speeds far above those used in testing.
When a helmeted rider suffers a fatal head injury, it frequently doesn't matter, because, to hit hard enough to sustain that fatal injury, he sustained multiple additional fatal injuries to other parts of his body. In other words, the fact that the helmet didn't prevent the head injury was of no consequence.
The numbers clearly say that riders using DOT helmets simply survive crashes more successfully than those without them.

Myth 6: A Helmet Will Leave You Brain Damaged in an Crash When You Would Have Simply Died

Of course that's possible—your helmet attenuates the impact energy enough to keep the injury from being fatal but not enough to keep all of your eggs from getting scrambled. However, that's rare, and if you hit that hard, you are likely to get killed by some other injury. It's actually the un-helmeted rider who is likely to cross from animal to vegetable kingdom, and often from a relatively minor impact that would have damaged nothing but his ego if he'd been wearing a DOT helmet.

Myth 7: A Skilled Rider Should Be Able to Handle Almost Any Situation

The sharpest, most skilled motorcyclist in the world isn't going to be up to the task when a car turns or pulls out in front of him a short distance ahead and stops directly in his path broadside. Believing that your superior skills will keep you of trouble is a pipe dream, even if they are as good as you think. No matter how skilled you are, it's better to ride to avoid situations that can turn ugly. Slow down, scan farther ahead, and think strategically. And dress for the crash.

Myth 8: If You Are Going to Crash, Lay It Down

I suspect this line was developed by riders to explain why they ended up flat-side-down while trying to avoid a crash. They over-braked or otherwise lost control, then tried to explain the crash away as intentional and tried to make it sound like it wasn't a crash at all. Maybe motorcycle brakes once were so bad that you could stop better off your bike while sliding or tumbling. If so, that hasn't been true for decades. You can scrub off much more speed before and there be going slower at impact with effective braking than you will sliding down the road on your butt. And if you are still on the bike, you might get thrown over the car you collide with, avoiding an impact with your body. If you slide into a car while you are on the ground, you either have a hard stop against it or end up wedged under it. Remember that the phrase "I laid 'er down to avoid a crash" is an oxymoron, often repeated by some other kind of moron.

The only events where being on the ground might leave you better off are: 1) on an elevated roadway where going over the guardrail will cause you to fall a long way, or 2) in that situation you see occasionally in movies, where the motorcyclist slides under a semi trailer without touching it. That's a good trick if the truck is moving.

Myth 9: One Beer Won't Hurt

Maybe not while you are drinking it, but if you get on your motorcycle after that, the effects of a single beer can get you hurt for life. No matter how unaffected you are sure you are, all the studies say differently. You increase your risk to yourself and to others when you drink and hit the road. Also, as you age, your metabolism slows down, and those "coupla drinks" you had last night may still be affecting you when you hit the road the next morning.

Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes

In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it.

Myth 11: I'm Safer on the Street than on an Interstate

The thinking here must be that slower is safer, but that's only really true after the accident begins. Controlled-access roadways are inherently safer because all the traffic is going the same way, and there are no side streets from which someone can pop into your path, no pedestrians, and, often, less roadside "furniture" to hit if you depart the roadway. Running down the road at 70 mph side-by-sidewall with the whirling wheels of a semi may feel hairy, but you are actually safer than at half that speed on a city street or even a country road.

Myth 12: A Skilled Rider Can Stop Better with Conventional Brakes than with Anti-Lock Brakes

Extensive testing done recently disproves this popular notion. Even on clean, dry, flat pavement, skilled, experienced riders (who did hundreds of panic stops for the testing on outrigger-equipped motorcycles) stopped in less distance with anti-lock brakes (ABS) than with conventional or linked braking systems. Though the tests didn't include samples on surfaces with slick, dirty or wet spots, ABS certainly would have performed even better under those conditions while eliminating much of the risk of crashing.

The other cool thing about ABS on a motorcycle is that allows you to safely practice panic stops without risking a crash caused by lock-up.

Anyway, the next time tells you that he had to "lay it down" or that green bikes crash more than purple ones, you can nod and snicker internally or challenge them. Just don't base your own riding choices on what other people assume unless their is some solid science to back it up.

I don't feel so good about giving my girlfriend a ride on my bike knowing she's wearing boots that are really thin and don't cover her ankles.
i dont really know wear to begin. does anyone have any suggestions for what i should look for as far as a reliable bike, not too difficult to ride for a beginner, a bike that can go on longer roadtrips but also get me around the city, and in somewhat of a lower price range?
any suggestions would be much appreciated.

in response to my instruction to keep defense of public statements in a public forum, mudgely sends me a private message.
i specifically said to not contact me privately because it shows shame and cowardice. mudgley does it anyway. mudgely seems unable to defend his post publicly and instead tries to change the subject to my personality, my self-respect, his supposed evaluations of my opinions of his other unrelated predelictions; in short everything but a rational discussion on a topic that is insulting to law enforcement, disrespectful of motorcyclists in general and puts the public at large in a less-safe atmosphere by describing ways to succeed in pervasive speeding.

mudgley i don't care about your leather preference or how it came to be. my arguments are as i've repeatedly describe; directly related to your statements and accurately targeted to my opinion that your behaviour in posting them is unsafe, disrespectful and insulting. keep your response on topic, don't delve into immature and unintelligent debate tactics, if you can.

Leather Pride License Frame

Some years ago, I put a "leather pride" license plate frame on my truck. The leather pride logo is black and blue stripes and a red heart, similar to many police organization logos. Since then, I have been pulled over to be ticketed three times. Each of those three times, the cop did not cite me. He just talked to me for a while and then let me go.

I am not sure at all that the license plate frame has anything to do with my apparent luck. I do know, however, that I had never been let off of a ticket by a cop prior to putting it on my car, and I have been pulled over but never issued a ticket after I put it on my car. So, I just put one on my bike. Normally, I watch my speed near where I work. There are cops lurking all over the place. It is heavily patrolled, and they write a lot of tickets. This time, I was not paying much attention to my speed, and just as I looked down at the speedo and realized that I was doing 70 in a 45 zone, the lights go on behind me. It was a motorcycle cop. He gets off his bike and approaches me on the right. Stands there looking at me for a while. Never asks for my license or registration. Then shines his light up and down on my bike. Then he says, "Slow down on my streets, my friend" Turns around and gets on his bike and takes off. No ticket.

Just thought I would pass this one along.

Lowering the height of a motocycle

In a couple of months, I aim to get my Ducati Monster 698. Rred of course to go with my hair :-)

Trouble is, is that I am only 5ft short. And while I can just about tippy toe - and I mean the very tips of my toes touch the ground on the Duc, I would prefer it if the bike were a tad shorter.

The dealer has said that there are a few options, i) remove the seat and have it remoulded so that's it's lower ii) use a special kit to reduce the suspension iii) have the bike lowered by the manufacturer (not too sure what they do there but it costs a fortune)

Has anyone here had a bike lowered? How was it done and what effects did it have (I know lowering the suspension may mean I can't take a pillion passenger -not that I'm too worried about that)

Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

Poll Please: Signing Over a Title

It would be of great use to find out what is needed in each state, preferably Texas, when titling a vehicle.
I would also like to know if whiteout makes a title null & void in your state, preferably Texas.

I bought a bike from a guy in Frisco, TX. There were some title issues: he tried to tell me that in Texas, all you needed was the Release of Lien and a Bill of Sale. I'd like to know if it's true.

There were two names on the Title with no "AND or OR" between the names. Can one person sign in the state of Texas?
This guy seems to think so.

I don't believe a word of what he tells me about how they do it in Texas. I'd like to hear from you to let me know.
Your response would be most appreciated.

I was wondering if there is anyone WHO IS NOT a member of a "3 patch" motorcycle club in California who have seen colors flying in CA.

What clubs have you seen and in what general area have you seen them?

I'm very interested in learning as much "general" information about the clubs that exist/operate within California.

Ofcourse the Hells Angels are the 1% in charge of CA. Is there a council of clubs or a similar organization they use to communicate with the other clubs that are not red and white support clubs?

I welcome any information anyone has one this topic. I would enjoy the dicsussion. I've lived in CA my entire life and have rarely ever seen any MC members, let alone run into any. This kind of "general" information is very important to know for anyone who rides in CA.

Hi everyone. Im crossposting this in several motorcycle tribes, as it may be of interest to some of us motorcyclists.

For clarity, I am not affiliated with this product in any way. Other than it sounds potentially useful for some people.

Found this website on either BARF or Pashnit forum a couple months ago.
Have yet to buy one myself, though likely soon will be doing so, so cant speak from direct experience with their reliability or workmanship.

Hi,I've been asked to vend food @ the Los Banos rally. Do any of you have any experience there or in Hollister? I'm wondering how well attended the Los Banos rally is and whether or not I should be in Hollister, which is way way more expensive.

Thanks, Phoenix

Frankenbike

Well, I bought my first bike about two weeks ago for $200. It's a 1982 Honda CB 650 Nighthawk SC. The guy who sold it to me tried to turn it into a custom job, by chopping the back off and welding on the back end and fender from a Harley Sportster. He intended to build this as a bike for his wife. He has also cut the tank with a welder, in an attempt to make the bike (and tank) look more 'wasp-waisted'. The welds on the tank still aren't sealed, so I would have to take it to a welder to get this done. Otherwise, I would need to get another gas tank. The guy suggested either a Harley Sportster tank, or simply a Nighthawk tank.

In the ad, the guy told me that all the bike really needed was a paint job for the frame...which seemed perfect for me since I am getting into doing murals on motorcycles (gas tanks, fenders, etc.) as well as helmets. He welded some custom handlebars for the bike which he thought looked cool, but I don't understand how they would work since they block the ignition lock.

I have also noticed that some other parts of the bike are missing, such as the speedometer/ tachyometer instrument panel.

Of course, half the Bike's engine is removed and is currently sitting in a box in the shed...along with the bike itself. However, in order to paint the frame of the bike, I will have to remove the rest of the engine (the bottom half) myself (or hopefully with some help).

I also recieved a Clymer shop manual for Honda CB fours along with the bike. I suppose this isn't as good as the owner's manual itself but it's better than nothing. The manual actually seems quite comprehensive. However, since I know very little about motorcycle mechanics it seems like quite a daunting task.

When I recieved the bike, I paid $200 in cash for it...yet neglected to get a reciept or the ownership papers for the bike. I called the guy who sold the bike to me right away, informing him of this. He told me that he would either mail the ownership to me, or mail a complex reciept to me...which would permit me to get the bike registered.

I have done quite a bit of research in regards to buying a motorcycle, especially a 'first bike'. One authour warned against the 'false economy' of purchasing a cheap 'fix-up' model, since it would cost more to repair a $200 'as is' bike than it would cost to buy a $2,000 used model that had been certified. I can certainly understand the reasoning behind this, since I must now not only purchase all the tools and parts required to get the bike up and running, but I must also invest the time to take apart the engine, paint the frame, and put the engine (and the bike) back together. Not to mention the fact that I will be effectively learning as I go.

However, even though the investment in tools and equipment for repair and maintenance of the bike might cost as much as another bike...I expect that I could save as much money by learning to do my own maintenance and repair myself. Also, if I want to get into the business of custom motorcycle murals I should become familar with disassembling and reassembling the engine in order to paint the frames of any potential customers I might have.

I can't really say that this bike is a 'rip off', since for $200 the bike is worth the cost of the tires alone. It would certainly be useful as a 'parts bike', since most of the peices of the bike seem to be there.

However, if I don't recieve the ownership/ reciept in the mail, I doubt it would be legally rideable.

Still, for a mere $200 it will be worth the experience just to custom paint the bike with a kick-ass paint job/ mural and reassemble the bike as a 'show bike'. Not to mention the experience I will get in disassembling, cleaning, tweaking, and reassembling the engine.

I am thinking of covering the tank, front and rear fender with H.R. Giger murals. However as this is my first bike (and I am bound to drop or crash it) I might want to start with something simpler, such as a flame job/ pinstripes, and so forth.

Ideally though, I would love to be able to ride this motorcycle as my first bike.

hello everyone~

im goin thru much again. i found another nail on my motorcycle tire just last nite... and no i didnt pick up a nail on a bike ride. found the motorcycle cover lifted off the tail end of the bike... would seem that it was meant to be noticed. this last nail is the third nail found in tire in a years time and is part of a string of events including shit smearing and even slashing of both tires without puncturing.

i pray that the torment transmutes and pray for protections and guidance during such trying times. im in very close proximity to the perpetrator and ask for the healing of the perpetrator in his sickness and tormenting ways... ask for love genuine and peace to melt the torment that tortures such souls to such dissolve... ask the energies that abounds... the universe that heeds the spirits that blessedly so to guide and assist in our developement and healing... especially when troubled so. i pray for guidance and protections and the wisdom to choose wisely in the choices laid before me.

any wellbeing meditations and prayers will be so welcome

thank you sincerely

You know the ones that I mean. 10-100 cages are all clumped together and there is a mile of open road in front of the first ones that are holding everyone back. I happen to enjoy the challenge of them. Here are a few of my tricks to get through them. What are yours?

1. Constantly evaluate, but don't commit to a line until the last moment, because things can change quickly.
2. Allow yourself plenty of leeway for a changing situation - don't cut it too close or any faster than necessary.
3. Once committed to a line, don't hesitate. At 90 ft/sec, an opening can close quickly.
4. When on a stretch of road with very few onramps or intersections, the right lanes can be the fastest and safest because the slower moving vehicles are more spread out.
5. Hesitate to enter an HOV lane when it first appears to let the slowpokes swarm into it. Then pass them in the regular lane, and you will end up ahead of them in the HOV lane.
6.Beware of passing large trucks on their right. They can hide an even slower vehicle which you won't see until you get around the large truck.
7. When someone tries to block you by crowding right while you are lane splitting, pay attention to the opportunity to pass them on the left. This one is my favorite, since it works so effortlessly most of the time and usually totally surprises the cager.

Loudish pipes and safety...

Here is a post from a Triumph forum. I know that opinions vary on this tribe as to whether motorists can't hear pipes, or if the noise just pisses them off. I found this interesting. Not exactly scientific... but one of those things that seems to have merit. Just as I have noticed that when cages turn in front of me, my high beam is always off.

"I stumbled onto an interesting social experiment once with regards to
pipe volume...

I worked at the same place for almost 10 years and lived at the same
house for 5 of those years so I took pretty much the same route to work
every day for those 5 years.

At the time I had a VTR1000F and had drilled out the baffles so it had a
nice (not offensively) loud note. Then I wrote it off (another story)
and decided to replace it with another VTR1000F but while I was running
the second one in, I left it entirely stock so I didn't change the
exhaust at all.

The difference in "safety" was amazing!! I rode the same route, at the
same time, with the same gear, same colour bike and with the same riding
attitude/practices - but immediately I had people trying to kill me!!
Just the normal stuff - changing lanes over the top of me, etc, etc,
nothing malicious, but very, very obviously more frequent. I had one
memorable 500m stretch where 6(!!!!) cars tried to merge on me one after
the other! I would have thrown my hands up in the air except I was
looking out for #7...

Of course, at first I thought I was just having a string of bad luck but
then when I finally drilled out the cans again, it all stopped.

So, while I'll be the first to admit that I really, really like a
louder-than-stock exhaust note simply because of the noise, I also stand
by the fact that there is a level of safety added by giving other road
users an "auditory warning" of your approach.

Noisy Pete (as my 2 y/o niece calls me)

ps note the correct spelling of "colour"..."

I am okay with Minor cosmetic flaws, provided the bike is mechanically in excellent condition, needing no mechanical repairs in near future.

If you or anyone you know is interested in selling such a bike, email me with information, photos and contact #.

That's the good news. The bad news -- at least for lead-foots -- is that it's only a matter of time before this rumor becomes reality

I am an adrenaline junkie. I have always engaged in high risk physical behavior. The plays a role in my riding. I have to be aware of the tendency, and moderate it.

Every day, I ride twice through Camp Pendleton, the home of about 40,000 Marines. I have noticed a progressive increase in velocity of the bikes getting on or off the road in that 20 mile stretch. The cars and trucks move through there at a fair clip - 75-90 mph during morning/evening commute times, and faster at other times. The bikes that get on from on of the entrances in the base are usually at 110+ by the time they are at the end of the onramp, and often they accelerate from there. I usually resist in the temptation to join in the fun, but I did recently, and we were zipping along in the 120-140 range. These guys are so hyped up from their deployments and drills. Most of them have been in combat now, and have had their adrenaline thresholds raised.

Of course, 100+ is a serious citation in Cali. They can impound the vehicle, and suspend or revoke a license. So, for the most part, the freeway traffic stays under 100 mph, usually in the 75-85 range. (the speed limit is 65) I also find it interesting that there is essentially no speed enforcement in this stretch. The last time that a cop overtook me in this area, I was doing 95. He just came up behind me and then zipped on around me. None of the other cars around me, which were all going the same speed as me bothered to slow down either.

Do you ride a bike for the thrill of it? How do you manage the risk, if you do?
Prospects and Probates?

Where have all of the prospects gone?

I just moved back to Wisconsin in mid-July. This weekend I attended my first patch-holder party since the mid 90s. (i do not include HOG as patch-holder material in the context of this posting). What I noticed is that while in the presence of six MC clubs, not a single club had a probate or prospect member. I asked my escort, a Retired Member to the hosting club, what was up. He voiced some opinions, but I feel unresolved with an answer.

During the time I lived in Southern CA, I occasionally would see someone with a prospect patch, but they were usually guys who were past the age of forty.

Although it was wonderful to see the same guys I partied with in the late 70s and early 80s still holding the annual club "Orgasm" out at the shack on club-owned land, I'm concerned with the longevity of this lifestyle. I'm haunted by the conspicuous absence of young people who share a desire to participate and carry on a tradition of being a "tribe" within one of the most intriguing lifestyles.

Does anyone have something to share related to their experiences of this phenomenon of the disappearing prospect?
What are clubs doing to promote the longevity of their long-standing clubs?

Kisses to all

There was this erratic driver on his cellular phone that I was staying clear of. Sure enough, at a stoplight, he rear ends me at very low speed. It was long after I had stopped at the light, and he had stopped behind me. I was not watching him anymore in my mirror. I guess he crept forward accidentally. I am just happy that I still had the front brake on, so the bike did not move. If I had not had the brake engaged, my guess is that I would have been pushed, possibly into the car ahead of me or into a fall.

Not a big event, but it pissed me off of course.

Replacing Brake Fluid?

I just took my bike into the shop for a routine service (oil, lube, chain adjustment) I usually do that stuff myself, but every once in a while I get crunched for time and it's convenient for me to drop off my bike at work and then pick it up at the end of the day. They also wash your bike and they do a damn good job. Anyway...

They suggested new brake pads all around, sounds good to me, they were feeling a tad squishy. They also suggested "Flushing" the brake fluid and replacing with it new. WHa? I've never heard of flushing brake fluid before. Is this legit? Should I pay someone nearly $100 to do this? I didn't think brake fluid went bad. (By the way, there are no leaks in my system and no one has suggested that there is anything contaminated about my current brake fluid).

I have a Harley 883XLH Sportster with a Vance & Hines 2 into 1 pro pipe standard baffle. Even the standard one is a BIT loud.

Here she is http://people.tribe.net/794c7417-c0d1-40c0-ac97-e4633c42e96c/photos/5af8db55-92ed-4eec-8144-32c44bb6f9e3

In this picture you can see a 2 into 1 pipe system with a super trap on it.

http://motorcycleclub.tribe.net/photos/1f148fd3-cffa-43b1-a75c-e78cb2c4fa95

Does anyone know what the part number would be for this super trap? Would like to change the tip on my system but everything around in my area is special order only and I don’t want to waste money ordering the wrong can.

Any help would be appreciated PM me or respond to this thread.

Thanks

Any suggestions for a good motorcycle store around L.A. (nr Hollywood preferred)? I'm looking to replace my Arai helmet, so a good selection of smaller Arai helmets would be nice.

Dilemma

I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on an ethical dilemma I'm having.

Less than a year ago I bought a 1980 Honda 650 CB Custom for about 600 bucks. I've put in about a grand since. The main problem is that the bike smokes, even worse than before the repairs (perhaps b/c an oil leak was stopped and that oil now finds it's way into where the gas combusts). My mechanic says it'll run some $400, plus parts, to replace the valve rings which are most probably the cause of the excessive smoking.

I wanna sell the bike as it's not that comfortable for my size anyhow. Should I sell it as it is? If so who would buy a bike that smokes so bad? Should I fix it first? Could I add the cost of repair to the whole ordeal?

Any feedback would be sincerely appreciated.

Subject: Ride to Work Day

Ride to Work Day is tomorrow. We hope you will ride to work, ...or just for fun, ...or for your errands. And we hope you will tell your riding and non-riding friends about the event (please forward this message). Any ride from A to B is important, especially on Ride to Work Day, when all riders can help increase awareness about the benefits of riding. If you'd like to know more, please see http://www.ridetowork.org. In addition, a one hour podcast interview about Ride to Work Day with event organizer Andy Goldfine is available at http://www.ridetowork.org or http://motocast.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=110863. Your support and participation will make a positive difference for motorcycling.

Safety notice: Some parts of the country tomorrow will be extremely hot. Do not participate if you have any concerns about your health or your ability to do so safely, especially regarding the temperature and weather conditions in your area. Remember to drink plenty of water, and possibly wear a wet bandanna around your neck for cooling (etc.).

Important Tire Recall Information

You may have heard that Michelin has announced a recall on certain Pilot Power and Power 2CT front tires in 120/70-ZR17. The tires can be identified by the following Department of Transportation (DOT) tire identification numbers, which can be found on the sidewall of the tire:

DOT 6UCW 980T
DOT 6UCW 979T

Please note this recall affects only tires with these specific DOT codes, which are also clearly marked "Made in France." Similar tires manufactured in other countries, which will be marked with different DOT identification, are not affected by this recall.

If you have purchased or are currently using a tire affected by this recall, please schedule an appointment to have the tire replaced. We try and stock this tire but at times we do run out temporarily and need to order from our supplier. There of course is no cost to the consumers participating in this recall.
Efforts to pass new helmet laws intensify

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-03-motorcycle-helmet-laws_N.htm

Enlarge By Philip G. Pavely, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pittsburgh police officers look over the mangled motorcyle belonging to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after he was involved in an accident in Pittsburgh on June 12, 2006. Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet at the time.

By Thomas Frank, USA TODAY
Lawmakers and safety advocates in eight states are pushing for new motorcycle helmet laws in a new trend sparked by soaring motorcyclist fatalities and last year's crash of NFL star Ben Roethlisberger.
The effort to require helmets marks a more controversial approach to motorcycle safety than previous efforts stressing rider training and motorist education.

HEATED DEBATE: Emotions run high over helmet laws

Proposed helmet laws have been strongly opposed by rider groups such as American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE), which say wearing a helmet should be a rider's choice. Those groups have helped push 27 states since 1975 to weaken helmet laws by applying them only to young riders.

Now "the balance is shifting," said Melissa Savage, a transportation analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: NFL | Pittsburgh Steelers | NHTSA | Ben Roethlisberger | Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"States are beginning to be concerned about the number of people killed in motorcycle crashes," said Barbara Harsha, head of the Governors Highway Safety Association, which supports helmet laws.

Motorcycle fatalities soared from 2,116 in 1997 to 4,553 in 2005 as other roadway deaths declined. Motorcycle riding also grew, but the fatality rate nearly doubled from 1997 to 2004, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The agency says helmets are "the most effective safety gear" for motorcyclists. But helmet use dropped from 71% in 2000 to 51% in 2006, NHTSA says, adding that helmets saved 1,546 lives in 2005.

Harsha said the push for tighter laws also is inspired by Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback who broke facial bones when his motorcycle collided with a car last June. Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet.

A helmet bill in the Hawaii House calls Roethlisberger's crash "a grim reminder of how important a helmet is."

Helmet-law proponents say it's a tough fight — bills have been defeated in five of the states: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma. After he introduced Delaware's first mandatory-helmet bill in more than 20 years on March 14, state Rep. Gary Simpson got e-mails from people vowing to campaign against his re-election. "It's a very strong lobby," Simpson said.

Colorado state Rep. Diane Primavera expects her helmet bill to be defeated but vowed to try next year. She said her measure drew attention to Colorado's status as one of three states with no helmet law. Twenty-seven states require helmets for riders under a certain age, usually 18 or 21. Twenty require them for all riders.

Paul Williams, state coordinator of the Helena, Mont., ABATE chapter, who this winter helped defeat his state's first helmet proposal in a decade, said helmet laws are inevitable. "I hate to say it, but I think it will eventually pass," said Williams. "In this country, we're slowly losing our rights for choice."

Do you ride a motorcycle? Share your helmet experiences, whether they've led you to be for or against helmet laws. Also, if you don't ride a motorcycle, give us your opinion. How do you think helmet laws compare to seatbelt laws?

Best Cult Classic Biker Film of the 50's-70's?

Okay, so everybody has seen Easy Rider and it's difficult to argue that it belongs either at the top, or near the top of this list. That being said, what is your favorite film? The Wild One is another great classic of course; I'm a Lee Marvin fan of that one. Tonight we're watching "Werewolves on Wheels", 1971. I just found the movie poster for it yesterday and it's hanging on my wall. It looks quite entertaining. We're doubling it up with The Worlds Fastest Indian" which I have yet to see.

I'm really interested in hearing about DVD titles of B&W movies available in particular, but all titles welcome.

Me and 3 friends are starting a club. We already have our patch designed just haven't had them made yet. We are not intending on bringing anyone else into the club other than us and our ladies. The patch has our logo in the middle and our name is long enough that we were going to put half of it on the top rocker and the other half on the bottom rocker. We're not going to have an AMA patch. I do not know what a support patch is so that is another question I would like answered. But is there anything else we need to take into consideration when starting our club, and is there anything wrong or offensive about the way we are styling our club patch? We will be attending rallies with our patches on. We respect other clubs and do not want to show any disrespect or cause any problems just by someone looking at our patch and deciding we did something wrong. All answers and input are greatly appreciated.

After being a rider for 40 years, I finally fullfilled my dream and bought my first bike. I am now the PROUD owner of a 1996 Suzuki Intruder VS8, royal blue fading to white on the gas tank. I don't do things half way, when I got my white helmet I took it to get it personalized with "Gammy" surrounded by butterflies (these are my passion and I have them everywhere, even my tattoo, which is my first and last).

I am soooo excited, it is being worked on at the moment as my son-in-law who is a mechanic, but not motorcycles, put too much fuel cleaner in the tank then Gunned it down the highway and blew the head gasket out. I have now had to purchase a 130.00 Upper End Head Gasket Kit. As you can guess it had to be ordered and won't be here until Friday (BUMMER) I hope to start riding Sunday if he gets it done. It's called a valuable lesson for him to learn. By the way I found out you have to buy the kit for both heads so at least I know everything will be new and I am starting a log of all maintenance I am doing.

So, this past weekend, I rejoined the ranks of motorcyclists after a 10 year "off" period. I own a Triumph Speed Triple.

In buying it, I picked a cool retro Triumph jacket, which has the British flag and a Triumph patch sewn onto it. Is there a chance that a MC member could interpret those as MC colors?

So, I just found out that the Santa Cruz Vampires MC existed. Was it around right after The Lost Boys hit the screen? Is it a riding club or are they 1%ers?

If they're a simple riding club, I'm bummed that I didn't hear about them when I lived in the Bay Area...

Deal's Gap Warning (Genuine)

This post was pulled off the Forum Board of the Georgia BMW Club. Just passing it along.

This was posted by Darryl Cannon A.K.A. Killboy on the Deals Gap Yahoo discussion board, and also by TNHP officer Cagle on his myspace page. Always a little skeptical when I see posts that begin with "A trooper said...." but he was googled and he's the real McCoy. Another interesting thing that I found on a Deal's Gap news site is that the troopers are riding BMW 1150RT/Ps....
~~~~~~~
"EVERYONE WHO GOES TO DEALS GAP------PLEASE READ THIS-----I'M TRYING TO
HELP YOU ALL OUT"...posted by a State Trooper:
"Hey, just to give you a heads up for next season----we have a new captain in the knoxville district which covers blount county------ he has already told us that we will put a stop to the "race track driving" up on the dragon this year------so far what they have said is that the speed limit is 30mph and "ANYONE" caught going 50mph and up will be charged with reckless driving and will be jailed and their bike/car will be impounded--- --I am telling you
this because i am trying to put the word out to everyone i know----or to people who know people that go up there-----I don't want to have to take people to jail for this---however I have bills to pay and I kind of like having a job---so never the less I have to do what i am told to do-----so the way i see it is that if killboy.com knows and you know and dealsgap.com knows and whoever else can find out can pass this along---it will benefit everybody--- -----feel free to copy and pass this to let everyone know-------if you get caught up there it is only your fault because i am trying to pass the word along for everybody's sake-----we are
not just going to come up from the bottom like in years past---they are gonna have us go through cherohala skwy in north carolina and come from the top down to the bottom----so no more free rides on your way back to the state line----they are gonna bring unmarked cars with radio's and have unmarked bikes up there----this will be a joint effort with blount county and the THP-----The entire THP motor unit will be brought in 2 people at a time(for a week long assignment) to be paired up with the local car----they plan on busting tail at least 3-4 times right off the bat---then they will sit back and see what takes place-----these orders came from Nashville Headquarters- --we have a complete brand new higher ranking structure from the very tip top spot down----they have said we will work until the problem is solved----just wanted to give you and your friends a heads up.......... SIGNED...
.......Trp Cagle with THP assigned to Blount County Division---- (don't come crying to me if you get busted----cause I'm telling you now)"
As a side note, for those who haven't ridden the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com) use more caution on the Dragon and Deal's Gap, because of the faster bikes, (i.e. crotch rockets) and the unexpected trucks that use that Intrastate highway 129.. A good time to ride the Dragon is on Monday and Tuesday around 7 to 11 AM... the earlier the better.... Ride safe, hey average 30 MPH on that 11 miles...and you done something!!!
An environmentally friendly motorbike has been produced.
The ENV (Emissions neutral vehicle) runs on a purpose-built hyrdrogen fuel cell and only emits water and is silent - no throbbing engine noises.
I don't think it will replace my motorbike - but I can see it becoming a very popular commuter bike.
I'm not sure how long ago this was broadcast, but I just got the link on the BMW listserv.  It's actually a fair and pleasant news broadcast explaining that lane sharing is legal if done sensibly.
Check it out and forward to your friends stuck on the inside of those machines.
Trailers, Sidecars, and Dogs
I am just starting out to learn to ride a motorbike, but I thought I would ask a hypothetical question about sidecars. Ever since I was a child, I always wanted not just a motorcycle, but a motorcycle with a sidecar. Can you get generic sidecars that attach to any motorcycle?
For that matter, how about motorcycle trailers? Are they somewhat generic in that they can be attached to any bike? I guess if I am interested in this kind of stuff, then what I REALLY want is a massive touring bike.
Also, what about putting a Rottwieler sized dog in a sidecar? Would that be inhumane? I am about to inherit a large, friendly dog. Of course, if I can't take passengers then I obviously can't take a dog either. Even if I did take a dog, it could only be in a sidecar. Logic dictates that if you yourself need a helmet and leathers to ride a motorbike, then your dog would obviously be in danger. There is also the possibility of rocks flying up from trucks and hitting your dog (or you).
However, I have seen guys on 'Chopper Trikes' with dogs.
Bike Week at Myrtle Beach
Hey y'all,
If you are planning to go to bike week at Myrtle this year and you don't have accomodations yet, let me know.  My dad has a week at the Fairfield timeshare resort there that he is trying to sell. I've seen the resort and it is very nice. It's for a 3 bedroom unit so there would be room for 3 couples. If you or someone you know is interested, please email me here on Tribe.
Normally I wouldn't troll on a tribe like this, but my dad is stressed out about getting this time share week sold. If you are unfamiliar with time shares, they work on points. My dad owns the points and turns them in for a specific date at a specific resort. So, you would not be buying ownership or actual timeshares. Rather, you would be buying just that  week's accomodation at the resort, same concept as if you prepaid for a hotel.
replacing just one tire?
I just bought a new bike, the back tire is newish and the front tire probably needs replacing (though is no where near "dangerous" yet).
Can I replace the front tire with a different type/brand than the back and then replace the back with the same type/brand as the front later?
Or should I just bite the bullet and put two new tires on? I just feel bad because I'd be wasting some of the usefullness of that decent back tire.
Thanks.
Newbie with a request for advice
Hey all. I just got my motorcycle license in the mail and I am all set to get a bike. There are so many choices! At first, I really wanted a Harley Sportster but, kinda expensive, no? Besides, probably not the best choice for a beginners bike.
My question: What do you advise for a starter bike? I'm about 115lbs so nothing too big. I've been told that I should get a 600.... thoughts? I've been looking at Honda Shadows....
Thanks! and hello!
Non-club riders
I'll preface this by stating that some of these suggestions are more on the mark for a 1% club than for a riding club, but I'm not going to assume that a non-club rider will know the difference and which clubs are which. With that said, if you're a motorcyclist who's never been around clubs and you find yourself in the company of a motorcycle club, here are some guidelines to keep you from attracting negative attention:
1. Be respectful. That doesn't mean "kiss their ass," but exercise caution based on the assumption that offense will have consequences for you. "Don't poke the bear" is more like it.  Just treating them the way you'd want to be treated is 90% of the battle.
2. Don't call a patch holder "bro" or something similar. To most clubs, that's a term they reserve for fellow club members, and if you use it with them you're asserting that status without having done anything to earn it. That may go over about as well as a white guy calling a black man the n-word..
3. Don't mock or ridicule their club's colors. Even in fun. Even online with smilies. They are best thought of as a symbol of the connection to the club, and people have worked hard demonstrating dedication to the club in order to be allowed to wear them. Making light of it will incense people the way some people get upset by flag burning.
4. Don't try to touch a patch holder's colors, either the patches or the vest they're on. Would you climb on to their bike without asking for permission? I didn't think so. Think of this as being about as presumptuous.
5. Don't name drop. You might know patch holder "Rex," Road Captain for the "Bunny Slippers MC," but dropping his name early in a conversation to establish credibility or imply that you're protected by a club is tacky and probably won't get you cut any slack anyway. "Rex" may kick your ass personally if he hears you've been presenting yourself as one of his chums and then annoying the hell out of other clubs. It just makes you both look bad and doesn't help matters.
6. Don't lie or brag. Just be yourself, and never try to present yourself as being someone or something other than what you are.
7. Under many circumstances, it's best to avoid directly referring to a club by name. If you say something vaguely negative about a specific club by name, by the time it gets to them the story could be very overblown.
8. Don't assume a patch holder will shake your hand at first meeting. Don't be offended by this, just let the club member make the offer first.
9. If you already know a patch holder, don't just walk up to him/her and interrupt when they are with other members. Wait till he/she acknowledges you first and NEVER touch them or put your arm around them like a buddy.  If for some reason you're not acknowledged at all, then just keep walking.
10. A patch holder may not, and many times will not, acknowledge your wife or girlfriend, especially on a first meeting. Don't be offended by this, they're probably a bit hyper-sensitive to creating an impression that they're flirting in disrespect of your relationship. Take it as a compliment.
11. If you inadvertantly offend, be willing to
